A native Floridian, Paul Nelson was raised by a loving mother after his father was killed in an accident when he was only six - suddenly making him the man of the house. He later worked on shrimp and charter fishing boats in Panama City until he joined the Navy and worked on aircraft carriers. After completing college, he received a Doctorate in Law from Florida State University and founded a law firm with emphasis on personal injury and product liability. Several of his cases received national acclaim.
Currently editing his second novel, To Kill A Judge, Paul now lives in North Carolina, where he writes and works with his wife, Sissy, a World Champion equestrian, at their Equestrian Training Center in Chapel Hill.
Official Apex Reviews Interview: Paul Nelson (In The Flesh)
Apex Reviews: Thanks for joining us for this interview, Paul. We're looking forward to sharing more about your book with our readers.
What inspired you to craft this quite compelling tale?
Paul Nelson: As a lawyer I was confined to taut, legal, descriptions in my writings; but I always wanted to let loose and express what I thought. What better way than to expound on my area of expertise? Although this novel is fiction, the idea came from cases that I actually worked on when I practiced law.
AR: Did you perform considerable research on Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) prior to bringing the story to life?
PN: Yes, in preparation for trial and in discovery, I spent at least two hundred hours in researching MPD.
AR: Why do so many different misconceptions surrounding MPD still exist?
PN: Even the psychiatric profession has profound disagreements as to the components of MPD and the patients themselves don’t make things any easier to understand. Some MPD’s go through life completely unaware of their other self who may be completely abhorrent to their own belief system and yet others not only are aware of their other self, but knowingly and willingly switch for various reasons.
Quite a mystery.
AR: What is it about Judith's case/story in particular that makes it so compelling for Paul?
PN: Basically, when I went into the practice of law, I wanted to fight for the little guy, the one who was hurt and had no recourse. Judith fit that mold.
AR: What makes Dr. Greely's "treatment" of his psych patients so deplorable?
PN: Dr. Greely was scum. No professional in any field should take advantage of a client and do the things he did. Even more importantly, Greely’s field of practice is to help people with Judith’s problems, not compound them for his personal sexual gratification.
AR: What kinds of responses has the book generated thus far?
PN: Surprise, wonder, sympathy, disgust, you name it the responses run the gamut of emotional reaction with one exception; no one has expressed boredom.
AR: Please share more with us about your publisher, BooksForABuck.com.
PN: BooksForABuck is a publisher with a principal who gives formerly unpublished authors with decent material a chance to go forward. Rob Preece, the owner, is a likable individual who respects his authors and does not try to own them, just guide them.
AR: What are your future writing/publishing aspirations?
PN: In my mind I have several stories that came from personal experience, being a confidant and just having a curious mind. The next novel that is almost ready for publication is titled “To Kill A Judge” and as the name implies, it is a legal thriller. I think of myself as a Grissom with a different approach to my stories than he has with his.
AR: In addition to being an author, you're also an accomplished attorney. Please share more with us about your efforts in that field.
PN: I was a trial attorney with over three hundred trials under my belt. I tried both civil and criminal cases in both Federal and State courts. Many of my cases received national attention.
AR: You also own an Equestrian Training Center. What led you to pursue that particular endeavor?
PN: I’ve ridden and owned horses all my life and when I married Sissy, we just gravitated to it. Sissy is a four-time world champion equestrian and for us, it’s a natural.
AR: How can our readers learn more about you and your ongoing efforts?
PN: We have two websites, www.PaulNelsonAuthor.com and www.NCHorseplay.com where anyone can see what’s happening where we are. I have a blog, Author In The Flesh and am on Facebook and Myspace.
AR: How can they contact you directly?
PN: My e-mail address is Equestrianpaul@bellsouth.net.
AR: Thanks again, Paul, and best of continued success to you in all your endeavors!
