Official Apex Reviews Interview: Richard Henegan (Gestation: Unborn Hostage)

Apex Reviews: Thanks for joining us for this interview, Richard. We're looking forward to sharing more about your book and other efforts with our readers.

What served as the primary inspiration for the story?

Richard Henegan: Basically, I wanted to write a suspenseful story about a pregnancy; and the idea came to me that a hostage situation involving two strong but opposite characters would be the perfect platform upon which I could build this harrowing tale.

AR: What's the significance of the title?

RH: Gestation describes the pregnancy this story revolves around and the subtitle, Unborn Hostage, refers to the fetus who is imprisoned along with the main character.

AR: What makes Wendy so personally passionate about the pro-life cause?

RH: Wendy's belief system is generated by two forces. First, an internal, deeply held religious conviction that abortion is wrong; and second, during her nursing career she has witnessed many women conceive easily but do not want to carry their pregnancy. Wendy is unable to have children or her own which makes this aspect emotionally painful also.

AR: Why do you think the issue of abortion remains such a controversial one in America?

RH: Mostly because of the passionately held and differing opinions that define both sides of this issue.

AR: How have readers reacted to the book thus far?

RH: Every single reader I’ve heard from tells me they couldn’t put the book down. The characters and ending have elicited very visceral reactions.

AR: How has your publishing experience been thus far with iUniverse?

RH: So far everything has gone smoothly. The ability to purchase the book online is easy, but I wish they had more of an impact getting the novel on the shelves of bookstore chains. I suppose that’s the downside of self-publishing as an unknown author.

AR: In addition to being an author, you're also a practicing physician. Please share more with our readers about your endeavors in that field.

RH: I've been practicing OB/GYN since 1982 which has afforded me the ability to be a part of the birth experience with thousands of women. I truly admire the female sex for what they endure to carry and deliver their babies.

AR: What's next for you?

RH: I am working on a second fiction novel in my “spare time”. The title is The Castle Man and is based on a character I lived next to as a young boy. It is also in the suspense/thriller genre.

AR: Do you have a website where our readers can learn more about you and your ongoing efforts?

RH: Yes, I do. It is www.richardhenegan.com. Anyone interested can find out more about the book and links to sites where it is sold. Reviews are also posted there.

AR: Also, how can they contact you directly?

RH: I have an email address on my website where readers can contact me directly.

AR: Any final thoughts you'd like to share?

RH: I have been able to realize my dream of publishing a fiction novel through iUniverse. It would be nice to have a commercial success too, but the very positive feedback from my readers thus far has been rewarding and has made the long hours spent on crafting the story and characters more than worthwhile.

AR: Thanks again, Richard, and best of continued success to you in all your endeavors!
