The Dark Side Of Mania introduces readers to the life of a manic depressive with a frankness that only someone who’s been there could conjure up. This well-written account of the illness mixes anecdotal situations with the scientific evidence needed to lend it credulity.
Author Bill Dunn uses dark language and heavy symbolism to account for the growth and manifestation of his illness, providing his life story in fits and starts typical of a memoir. He then combines this with partial tips and coping strategies for others in his situation; however, what sets this book apart is the heartbreaking account of Bill’s wife and her take on his illness. Viewing the illness from the outside, from another’s perspective, is striking.
Dunn’s account is highly recommended to any family or couple dealing with manic depression. Observing the illness and its effects will help anyone to understand the stresses it puts on a family, and paying attention to the tips and medications that worked for Bill and others like him may lend a helping hand to others in the same situation.
