Thanks for joining us for this interview, Gerald. We're looking forward to sharing more about your book and other efforts with our readers.
What inspired you to craft this inspiring, insightful self-help manual?
Gerald Simmons, Jr.: This is a good question. The funny thing is that the information within my book started off as only being 10 simple steps for achieving a successful life according to me. After seeing the response I was getting from people that read my tips and loved them, but at the same time they where wanting more than just the 10 short straight to the point tips I began to develop an actual book out of them. My passion to motivate others in this so called recession, while motivating myself at the same time was my inspiration. I would also like to add that I think the word “recession” is the most over used word of 2009!
AR: The book is composed of helpful scripture, quotes, and anecdotes, among other offerings. Did it take you long to bring the various elements of the volume together?
GSJ: My book is composed of all those elements due to the fact that I wanted everybody that comes in contact with “The GPS Success Guide” to be able to take something from it. Honestly it did not take long at all to put my information together. I have been finding, reading, and sharing motivational quotes and poems online since about 2006. So being able to find the right scriptures and quotes for my book came pretty easy. The anecdotes throughout my book were even easier because it is my life and lessons from living and moving forward in my life. It actually took me about six months to put my book together. Most people do not know this but I designed the front and back covers of my book myself also.
AR: What would you say is the central, most important element to fostering success?
GSJ: The single most important element to fostering success is to define what the word means to you. Not what the world tells you that success is supposed to be but what you found out for yourself about what success is. I have found out that success is an individual journey that has to be defined by self.
AR: What kinds of reactions have readers had to the book thus far?
GSJ: So far the reaction I have been getting from readers has been great. They have been saying that it flows very well and is very easy to follow. Here are some reader’s comments:

AR: What's the main message that you'd like readers to take away from the book?
GSJ: The main message I want readers to take away from my book is that YOU and only YOU are the one that can hold YOU back from reaching your success in life. No matter what happens in your life you have to make the decision for yourself about how you will allow it to affect you. You can either let it hold you back with fear of continuing to move forward in life or you can use it as fuel to keep you moving forward in life.
AR: Please share more with us about your publishing company, Innovative Visions.
GSJ: Right now my wife and I are working on our own publishing company Innovative Visions Publishing (InV). Although it is not totally done yet, we already have our first book out. We want to build this company so that we can help others that are out there with an idea of writing a book know the steps that they can take to get their books out there. We will be more than just your average publishing company as we will focus on showing and teaching individuals how to do majority of the work it takes to get a book published themselves. Innovative Visions Publishing will be coming your way early 2010.
AR: In addition to being an author, you're also a motivational speaker. Please share more with our readers about your endeavors in that field.
GSJ: I like to call myself a self proclaimed motivational speaker. With the lessons that my book teaches I figured someone has to teach them to the people for them to really get it, so why not let it be me. I am fairly new to the Motivational Speaking world, but I’m sure to leave my mark soon. One of my favorite quotes is by Mr. George Washington Carver which goes like this:
“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the WORLD”
With that being said I would like to say HELLO WORLD!
AR: What's next for you?
GSJ: The next big thing for me will be happening on the 13th of February, 2010. I will be one of the featured authors in the AllStar Author Showcase in Dallas, Texas:
