Imagine
one morning walking out of your house on your way to work, not knowing
that in a matter of hours it would take you nearly a year before you
could ever take another step…
Such a grim prospect may be too difficult for many people to conceive, but, for Loretta Harris, it became a traumatic reality.
The Journey Less Traveled
chronicles the tragic events that transpired in Harris' life
surrounding a near-fatal car accident that she suffered in the summer
of 2006. Following a head-on collision that caught her and her
passengers completely by surprise, Harris underwent numerous emergency
surgical procedures over the ensuing critical hours to repair the
extensive damage done to various bones, organs, and systems of her
body. Her very life hanging in the delicate balance, many times during
the initial stages of her recovery, doctors, other medical staff – and
even associates of hers – declared that she wouldn't pull through, but
her family, friends, and extended network of supporters all banded
together in a united prayer chain for the preservation of her life, all
bolstered by the faith that she would survive.
And survive she
did, but, as it would turn out, that may have actually been the easy
part. What followed for Harris was a grueling stint in physical
therapy, where she had to learn all over again how to function on her
own, including re-learning how to walk – one agonizing step at a time.
During the seemingly endless months of her journey to ultimate
wellness, Harris endured the full spectrum of emotion – including
everything from hopelessness to depression to all-out anger – but she
persevered through it all and made an amazing full recovery, emerging
stronger, healthier, and wiser than ever before.
The Journey Less Traveled
is not your typical survivor story. The injuries that Harris suffered
from the accident – not to mention the extreme difficulty of the
recovery process – would be entirely too much for most individuals to
handle. Appropriately enough, though, Harris is colloquially known as
"Faith" by her family and friends, and it is that very faith that
brought her through the darkest time of her young life. During the
entire ordeal, Harris questioned many things, but one thing she never
questioned was her faith in God and His ability to have her emerge
victorious over her situation. Even when she couldn't take a single
step in physical therapy without yelping in enormous pain, she drew on
the strength of a higher power – a strength that superseded her own –
which made it possible for her to overcome the adversity of her
recovery.
And Harris credits that same higher power for helping
her deal with the aftermath of the accident, including the death of a
beloved student of hers who was a passenger in the car with her. By
focusing on the beauty of the young life that he lived, as well as the
considerable impression that he made on all those who knew and loved
him, Harris is able to celebrate him in the wake of his death,
preventing herself and others from succumbing to the throes of their
grief.
The Journey Less Traveled
is an inspiring, uplifting account of an indomitable spirit, as well as
a striking testament to the sheer power of human will. Readers will
surely be enlightened by this compelling tale of someone who was thrust
into the darkest recesses of earthly suffering and overcame it all with
the force of a true spiritual soldier. The greatest lesson offered in
the pages of this moving memoir is that no matter how difficult events
in your life may seem, always know that someone else has not only
suffered worse, but overcame it all – so nothing is stopping you from
doing the same.

Official Apex Reviews Interview: Loretta Harris (The Journey Less Traveled)
Apex
Reviews: Loretta, thanks for joining us for this interview. We're
looking forward to learning more about your book and other efforts.
Precisely how long did it take before you made a full recovery from the accident that nearly claimed your life?
Loretta
Harris: My accident occurred a little over two years ago. To be quite
honest, it is an ongoing recovery. I have recovered from the majority
(about 85%) of my physical ailments. This is with the exception of
day-to-day discomforts.
AR:
In the book, you mention that numerous family, friends, and other
supporters banded together to assist you in the aftermath of the
accident - some who even relocated just to be closer to you. Have your
family bonds always been so tight?
LH: Yes. The family
unit has always been supportive, but this experience took us to another
level of love and appreciation for each other.
AR:
Please share with our readers why you decided to keep the scars from
the accident, as opposed to having them surgically re-touched.
LH:
Well, I have a scar on every part of my body. You name it, and there's
a mark! Some scars are small and easily concealed. On the other hand,
the majority of the scars are large and revealing. I could not go
anywhere without people stopping to stare (they still do). I felt
embarrassed and insecure with my body. Surgery would be the only
answer, or so I thought. It wasn't until I changed my perspective
towards this accident and realized that these scars would serve as my
evidence of SURVIVING life's tragedy! I refocused my message to "I'm a
survivor," and I wanted the world to know.
AR:
In the book, you go into detail about the trial of the man who was
responsible for the accident. Did he really not show any remorse for
what he'd done?
LH: It was so sad, but the young Williams
was no older than 23 when he allegedly stole the vehicle that collided
with my four door Honda Civic on May 24, 2006. It was a hit and run,
and, unfortunately, my vehicle experienced causality. This young man
referred to himself as "Baby Killer." He took pride in taking the life
of an adolescent. This was and still is hard for me to swallow. On the
day of his trial, I saw no remorse in his eyes.
AR:
Our reviewer made special mention of how the power of your faith helped
pull you through the extreme difficulty of your recovery. How were you
able to maintain your faith in the face of so much adversity?
LH:
Although my body lay dismantled and bruised on that hospital bed, my
spirit and faith went untouched. About a week after my accident, while
in a semiconscious state and drugged up to alleviate the pain, my eyes
were sealed tight and the ventilator was the loudest sound in the room.
I was unresponsive to the surrounding voices, but there was a song on
the radio by Juanita Bynum. To the surprise of the onlookers, I
elevated my hand and waved in worship unto God. Tears rolled down my
eyes like a river. Yes, my faith was alive and well!
AR:
If there's one piece of advice that you could give to anyone currently
struggling with considerable adversity in their life, what would it be?
LH:
My nurse shared with me these words of encouragement: "There will be
days when you want to give up, but giving up is not an option." This
life's journey is filled with unexpected circumstances – nothing is
guaranteed. It is easier to quit than to take the journey less traveled
and turn your tragedy into triumph. The choices that you make will
sculpt your tomorrow. Choose to live the triumphant life and take it
one day at a time!

concerning the death of that loved one, the shocking aftereffects of
that ugly divorce, sexual abuse, terminal illness, addictions, and
countless other tragedies, just know that you were created to overcome
adversity!
AR: Thanks again, Loretta, and best of continued success to you in all your endeavors!
LH: Thank you!
