The Organ Grinder and the Monkey
provides the reader with an insightful look into the lives of three
protagonists connected by their therapist, who has written books about
them and reaped the benefits of their stories. Seymour Petrillo is from
Steubenville, Ohio, who grew up with a gay father and spent most of his
time with his grandparents, who helped educate him on the history of
Steubenville. After he receives a college education, he moves to New
York in the hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Irving Hart is from
Brookline, Massachusetts. He grew up in a Jewish/Irish family, and his
mother and father owned a bookstore that catered to radicals. As a
young boy, he got lost, and, with the help of a policeman, he found his
way back home. He then decided that he wanted to be a New York City
Policeman. The last character we meet is Constance Powers. She's from
Boardman, Ohio, and, although her family is extremely wealthy, she
herself has never been rich. Her goal in life is to become a Rockette,
so she moves to New York City in the hopes of fulfilling that dream.
But, upon her arrival there, she finds it to be much harder to survive
then she thought, so she takes up dancing in a strip club.
All
three characters have their quirks, and they lead very different lives
from one another. Their individual stories are humorous, vulgar, and
written in a laid back way that's easy to read. All in all, Sam Moffie
has woven together a great story that will have the reader hooked from
the very first page. It's a raw, intelligent, and hilarious look into
three very unique lives.
